Homestead Ec | Food & Nutrition (Bread & Butter) Learning Unit

This unit introduces children to foundational kitchen skills through age-appropriate, hands-on learning. Designed for children ages 6-12, kids explore clean habits in the kitchen, basic kitchen safety, and the step-by-step process of baking and butter-making while building confidence and independence.

Lessons include understanding why aprons, handwashing, and clean workspaces matter; how to safely use measuring tools and kitchen equipment with adult guidance; and how everyday foods are made from simple ingredients. Children also explore the science of yeast and fermentation, the role of different flours and sugars, and how butter is made from cream. Real-world math is incorporated through measuring, fractions, and budgeting activities such as planning and costing homemade pizza. (Food ingredients not included.)

Each box includes four carefully curated learning tools, along with downloadable curriculum and step-by-step video lessons, selected to support each activity and encourage meaningful practice. Learning tools are designed to be reused across lessons and reinforce the “Leave No Crumbs” concept of caring for your space and using resources wisely.

This unit follows a Socratic-based learning approach, using adult-led discussion prompts and guided questions to encourage conversation, reflection, and real-world application. An optional math supplement aligned with California state standards (K-6) is included for families who wish to extend learning.
